For the final haunt on my tour, I headed to Oxford, AL to the Terrortorium.  I had visited them several years ago and was eagerly anticipating what they had in store for me this year.  Parking is free.  They do not accept credit/debit cards, but you can get cash at the food vendor for a small fee.  There are three attractions: the Terrortorium Haunted House, the Haunted Castle Dark Ride, and the Ferris Wheel.  They offer several ticket options that include one or all of their attractions.  We opted for the Terror Ticket for all three attractions.

Atmosphere: 10

Nestled into the old downtown area of Oxford, AL, it felt like driving through an old 80’s or 90’s horror movie.  Upon pulling into the parking lot, the feeling only intensified.  The front façade looks like an old fall festival straight out of a movie.  Looming over everything glowing demonically is the ferris wheel. Once you get onsite there are carnival games with Halloween themed prizes and food vendors offering funnel cake and other tasty foods.  A creepy clown wanders menacingly around the midway.  No detail is overlooked and really gets you in the mood for the terrors within.  This is certainly one of my favorite midways of any haunt I have attended and my best comparison would be a scare zone at Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights.

THEME/TRAIL: 9.2

We started our evening on the Haunted Castle Dark Ride.  It is an old fashioned dark ride that graced Panama City’s Miracle Strip in a former life.  It is great and enhances the atmosphere so perfectly rendered in the midway.  Then, after a brief jaunt on the Ferris Wheel, we headed into the main event.  In the first room, we were greeted by a ghoul who regaled us with tales of his Terrortoriom and then allowed us to proceed through his Nightmarescape.  The trail is brilliant and highly creative and long.  We started thinking that we were near the end about half way through only to be delightfully surprised for more around every turn.

Costuming/Makeup: 8.5

I was very impressed with the costumes, masks and make-up on the creatures we encountered.  Almost everyone was outfitted in an appropriately horrifying and creepy costume.  They had one of the creepiest clowns that I have ever encountered.  However, there were two actresses that did not seem to have any costume or make-up/mask and that turned what could have been a great scare into a bit of a letdown that threw me out of the illusion.

Actors:  9.7

Anybody that attends a haunted attraction knows that no matter how good the set, make-up, and special effects are, at the end of the day, it is the actors who either make or break the event.  These guys made it fantastic.  We were attacked and assaulted from all directions and never knew where they were going to pop up next.  Their timing was excellent.  And one of them (I don’t want to give anything away) managed to scare the crap out of me.  I jumped back and screamed like I haven’t in years at any haunted attraction.

Special Effects:  8.5

Terrortorium manages the blend the old and the new together seamlessly.  Their special effects blended modern animatronics with the ingenuity of past to create a lasting impression.   I loved the blacklight effects we encountered in the Haunted Castle Dark Ride.  My senses were assaulted throughout the Terrortorium.

Customer Service: 10

The customer service at Terrortorium is top-notch.  We spoke with several employees in the midway and at the attractions and everyone was extremely friendly and ready to assist.  More than that though, it really came across how much they enjoyed what they were doing.

Is It Scary?  9.4

In a word, yes.   In the main house, we lost the rest of our group about half-way through, as they were terrified and kept stopping and trying to turn back around every corner.  Both me and my husband jumped several times and then I was scared to the point of retreating once.  As I stated earlier, that just doesn’t happen to me in haunts anymore.  The Dark Castle Ride isn’t really scary.  It is horror themed, but I do not believe that it is meant to be more than that.  The Ferris Wheel also isn’t meant to be scary.  But, at least for me, it was the most terrifying part of the night and my husband had a good laugh at my expense.

Bang for your Buck:  10

It is most certainly worth every penny.  At $20 for all three attractions, it was a deal.  It was made even better by the fact that they keep the groups small.   Even the prices for the food and games were low.  Six bucks bought a chili cheese dog, a BBQ sandwich, and a drink.  Compared to other haunts, that is cheap.  The games were a mere $3 per play and you were guaranteed a prize.  Parking is free and plentiful.

Overall:

Terrortorium is hands-down my favorite from my tour this year.  They were game on from the moment we pulled into the parking lot.  I adore the midway and overall atmosphere.  It was fun and scary and I was sad when it ended.  They have really come a long way from when I visited them in the past, and they were pretty great then.  Whether I review them again next year or not, I will definitely be returning just to see what they have come up with.
