My third and final planned Scurryface Review stop this season was Nightmare at 3008. Nightmare is located on Highway 31 North, just past the Dollar General and the Carson Rd intersection in Fultondale. There’s plenty of free parking, and there is also a pizzeria and escape room attraction attached to the facilities.

Nightmare offers three unique haunt experiences, including an outside woods trail, but be sure to check for woods trail closures due to inclement weather. I highly suggest planning on attending on a forecasted rain free evening so you can experience all three. And please wear appropriate footwear. Even I forget sometimes and show up in a pair of brand new, not waterproof tennis shoes from time to time. Luckily, I had some accommodations made in spite of my moment of lax judgement.

Also, upon request, you can get a full contact haunt. If that’s what you want, be sure you’re ready for what that request entails. Don’t go to Nightmare, request full contact, and then start throwing punches. That’s a douchebag move. And we’re not here to encourage douchebag patrons. Nightmare’s actors are very adept at providing just the right amount of stranger danger, touchy feelies, without crossing the line. But one man’s “just right” may be another’s “too much”, so keep that in mind when deciding your experience.

Atmosphere 9

Nightmare at 3008 really amps up the atmosphere in their haunt. They have great lighting effects and set design, and they make a great use of their available space. As I’ve said in previous reviews, I really like when haunts take their patrons from oppressively claustrophobic to shockingly open and back again. And Nightmare delivers in this area.

Theme/Trail 10

They actually did it! They used theming appropriately. And did so with three different trails. You’re given an introduction to each trail, and then the trail proceeds to demonstrate their respective themes. They have a very realistic New Orleans/ VooDoo trail that accurately depicts the witchy vibes of one of our nation’s oldest “haunted cities”. The Underground trail really does succeed at making you feel like you’re kind of in an underground facility, especially considering you’re made to use a slide in order to enter the main trail. And after you’re introduced to the coal mining town themed woods trail, you’re given a bunch of coal mining weirdos throughout. It’s great, and I’m so happy I was given a theme focused haunt to review this season!

Special Effects 8

Nightmare at 3008 heavily relies on practical manual effects. That’s not to say that tech-centric effects are better. Nightmare has a labyrinthian quality to its design that I really appreciate. They use a lot of manual drop box frames effectively. And there are interactive set pieces that really add a realistic sense of unease.

Actors 9

These guys have such a natural talent for the spooks. You can really tell this haunt is full of seasoned actors and are making sure their fellow rookie actors are being trained properly. I can’t stress enough the importance of this kind of group dynamic, because it really is apparent for not just the trained eye, but the general public. Every actor ends up working their scene properly, and when someone needs a little extra help, there’s always someone who knows what to do to provide that aid. I loved it. And I wasn’t the only one who noticed.

Costumes and Makeup 8.5

Makeup and costumes at Nightmare have a quaint, homemade feel. But they’re still good. While many of the personal aesthetic demonstrations lack the polish expected of the bigger haunts, it isn’t poorly applied. Every face paint was scene appropriate, every costume fit well. And because the acting was so good, the makeup and costumes were more of a balanced accent to the portrayals than being the main focus, which just adds to the above mentioned natural feel. Oh, and then there’s this guy on leg AND arm stilts and TWO FACES that made me audibly giddy with how perfect he was.

Customer Service 8.5

Customer service staff at Nightmare is top notch. When we showed up, our ticket sales lady clearly explained what each trail was. We were directed to the appropriate que lines. Staff is willing and able to answer questions, and like to discuss all things spooky.

Is it Scary? 9

Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. I witnessed at least 10 groups or individuals chased out of the final scene in absolute hysterics. I definitely was at least startled a couple of times. And every aspect is just so much fun, even if you’re not easily scared like me, you’ll definitely be entertained.

Bang for Your Buck 9

At $18 bucks for the VooDoo and Underground trails, $13 for the outdoor trail, and $40 for all three, you’re looking at a decently priced haunt that provides an experience you should expect from a far more expensive haunt.

GO. SEE. NIGHTMARE AT 3008. Like this week. Seriously.
