Before gearing up for my final haunt review of the season, I decided to make a stop for my own personal fun and enjoyment. Traveling feeds my gypsy spirit and reviewing new attractions is always a blast for me, but sometimes even the best of us need an escape away from it all to relax, let go and let loose without having to worry about numbers and scoring. Especially when someone tempted me with the opportunity to meet “real life” Medusas and dinosaurs...say no more! I immediately hopped in the nearest getaway car and made a surprise road trip to Stone Mountain, Georgia to visit the famous Netherworld! One of the best haunts in America - without contest! Every year they come up with new themes to wow their record breaking guests and long time fans. This fall season it was all about Night of the Gorgons and Coldblooded (dinosaur aliens)! I can’t wait to share this mythical, otherworldly experience with all you of goblins and ghouls!
There are two mazes you can choose from at Netherworld this year or if your feeling adventurous, you can do both! We’d definitely recommend both for the full haunt experience!
Night of the Gorgons:
This is a maze that from the moment you step in line to the main entrance, you can sense that you’re in for a dark and entertaining thrill ride! Maybe it’s got something to do with that gigantic animatronic snake in the middle of the room or the equally large ritualistic alter on a nearby wall, but you very believably could either be in a temple of the Greek gods about to be eaten for dinner or in the hidden basement of some forbidden cult about to to be sacrificed to those same gods...either way, trust me, you won’t mind! Once inside, the actual maze you will encounter characters of any and all kinds. Winged gargoyle creatures that can actually fly, haggard witches, broken dolls that bungee out of the walls, gorgons with snakes for hair, a cyclops and so, so much more!
This is the shorter maze of the two, but still equally a thrill ride in itself. Here you will met resurrected dinosaurs and reptile alien experiments gone wrong. They’re vicious, hungry and looking for victims. Also, brace yourself and make sure you’re ready for the ultimate plunge when that elevator of theirs starts to go haywire!
It’s hard to put into words the atmosphere at Netherworld. It almost leaves you speechless. It’s THAT breathtaking, original and unique! It doesn’t matter how far away you live (I personally am two states over) this is one attraction everyone should make the journey to witness! They have characters, props and set designs that break through any and all horror aesthetic barriers and leave you questioning reality. You honestly become immersed in an entirely other realm full of creepy creatures and mythical monsters galore. Gargoyles, Medusas, vampires, yetis and so many others creatures that are not only ominously wandering inside of the haunt, but also crawling around on their midway and outside line areas too! Make sure you snap a picture with them in one of the numerous photo op areas they have in place on the midway as well...they have everything...alien plants, coffins, a rock giant and a skull throne...just to name a few! There’s a gift shop with strange souvenirs, a donut vendor and even a post apocalyptic military base arena where you can play laser tag for fun as well. And I can’t forget the pumpkin! Yes, you read that correctly...they have a gargantuan orange pumpkin that spits out multitudes of foam bubbles...and yes, you are allowed to play in them! Any 90’s kid whoever threatened to runway and live in Halloweentown, only to have their parents tell them it didn’t exist, will agree that clearly the adults lied because it’s in Stone Mountain, GA at Netherworld!
The actors at this attraction are all at the top of their game...whether it’s popping out of a shadowed corner or diving at your head from a zip line from the ceiling, all of their timing was calculated correctly and they hit their “boo” moments right on cue. This is impressive given the numerous cast members they have. In any basic haunt training in the industry, they will tell you that the actors are considered the “heart” of the haunt and the guests are the “blood” that flows through it to keep it alive. The Netherworld actors are an excellent representation of how this works. They keep the scares coming and the energy levels high during your entire experience.
Netherworld’s costuming and makeup teams are outstanding and unparalleled to the majority of the haunts in the industry. There’s an immediate notice of the time and innovative ingenuity that they put into making memorable monsters and other creations. They are in a league comparable to Universal Studios. Top notch skill and quality. Most of your interaction time spent with these grotesque, inhumanly creatures will leave you questioning if there really is a person behind the makeup/mask or if it’s your worst nightmare brought to life! They have unrivaled talent in this area.
This attraction sets the bar for special effects! Nothing short of spectacular! They’ve got strobes, fog machines, animatronic props, moving floors, vortex tunnels, actors on zip lines and bungee harnesses...you name it, Netherworld has it. They spare no expense. Their use of all this equipment captivates your every movement and pulls you into an entirely otherworldly dimension where at times, it becomes hard to tell the difference between illusion and reality. It is an overstimulating experience, but in all of the best ways possible!
They are very professional and down to earth. You can tell they really care about you enjoying your time spent at Netherworld from being courteous in the their gift shop and other vendor areas to the laser tag instructors taking time out of their schedule to tell guests all about the real “haunted” artifacts they have at Netherworld such as the original plane from the Tom Cruise movie, American Made, and the real life Annabelle doll! Great customer service!
Is It Scurry?
Without a doubt! With all of the astounding attention to detail with props, sets and characters, there’s never a dull moment. You’re constantly left guessing what is lying in the shadows next. Believe me, if the scare in front you doesn’t get you, the one right behind you will! You will scream, jump, laugh and maybe even accidentally bump into an invisible wall in the mirror maze, get startled then laugh all over again. Netherworld is spooky and entertaining the whole walk through!
To critique Netherworld would be like trying to rank Disney...it’s impossible! They’re immaculate! Owners - Ben Armstrong and Billy Messina, along with the rest of their leadership dynamic are geniuses at monster creations and the haunt process in general...from constructing memorable characters to set design and decor to basic mass crowd control, they’re PHENOMENAL! They know and have exactly what it takes to run a seemingly flawless production. Masters of their craft. Very few will ever reach this standard for aesthetic. There’s a reason why Netherworld is considered one of the top haunts in America. They do an unbelievable job at bringing your nightmares and the boogeymen who used to hide under your bed into actual creation! Netherworld is a spooktacular extraordinaire and a magical moment of monsters coming to life that all Halloween, haunt and horror lovers must experience and see to believe! Keep in mind, if you can’t make it this Halloween season, they also do a Krampus themed event in December. You definitely don’t want to miss out!
NOTE FROM SCURRYFACE OWNER:
OUR VIEWS OF NETHERWORLD ARE THIS, WE CONSIDER NETHERWORLD THE PINNACLE OF THE HAUNT INDUSTRY. THIS IS A PLACE WHERE HAUNTS AND HAUNTERS ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY FLOCK TO AFTER THEIR SEASON HAS ENDED. THEREFORE, WE DO NOT SCORE OR RANK NETHERWORLD. WE VIEW NETHERWORLD AS A PLACE WE ALL LOVE TO GO TO SO WE CAN APPRECIATE THE HAUNT INDUSTRY FOR WHAT IT IS. NETHERWORLD IS SIMPLY ON A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SCALE THAN THE REST OF THE COUNTRY. WE ARE CONSTANTLY ASKED, "HOW DOES THAT HAUNT COMPARE TO NETHERWORLD?" OUR REPLY IS ALWAYS, "IT DOESN'T. BECAUSE NETHERWORLD IS NETHERWORLD." -TYLER
