On the final night of my haunt tour, I ventured out into the drizzling rain to my first haunt of the evening, Eastaboga Manor.  The GPS directed me through the woods and down very dark winding country roads that will certainly cause some anxiety.  As we arrived at our destination, the Manor loomed imposingly in the distance. As we pulled into parking lot, an attendant directed us to a spot.  Parking is free.

THEME/TRAIL: 7.9

They have a neat backstory about a family murdered by Boxcar Joe, who rode the trains down the railroad.  After falling in love with the lady in the manor, he murdered the family when he couldn’t have her.  He then came back and murdered the next family that moved into the house.  It is a cool story and sets their theme for the haunt.  However, other than the first few scenes, it seems like the theme has been abandoned in favor of more traditional haunted house tropes.  That being said, they do a wonderful job with scene transitions and the path through the manor is filled with thrills and chills.  It is clear that most of their sets are created, rather than purchased.  Whoever built them is incredibly talented.  There were some truly beautiful pieces.

Atmosphere: 5.8

As you drive up to the manor, it is certainly spooky.  However, as we got out of our car, the first thing we heard was a commercial for laundry detergent playing on the loudspeaker.  I am not sure whether they are just playing the radio, or if this was some kind of sponsorship, but it certainly dampened the mood.    From there, you simply purchase your tickets and proceed through the line.  There didn’t appear to be anything else to do or see.  I did not encounter any wandering actors or see any food or souvenir vendors.   It was an extremely slow night and we did not have to wait long.  However, on a busy night, it would be frustrating to have nothing else when waiting to go into the house.

Costuming/Makeup: 8.5

Eastaboga Manor has some great costumes and make-up.  Their make-up artist kept it old- school and I was very happy to see that some of their actors were wearing latex, rather than airbrush that has dominated the industry the last few years.  The masks that they used were also impressive.  Each costume and make-up really fit their scene.

Actors:  8.7

The actors really sold the show.  Their timing was fantastic and they knew how to use their surroundings to get the scare.  I loved that even when they couldn’t get a “scare” the continued to interact with us.

Special Effects:  7.9

There were some lovely animatronics than blended perfectly with the creepy old manor and old school props and scenery.  However, much like their make-up, the special effects tended to be old school.  I loved seeing creativity reign when so much of the sets and props for haunted attractions are now purchased instead of built.

Customer Service: 9.5

Every single employee we encountered was friendly and helpful.  However, I noticed as we were getting in the queue that they had a VIP option.  Although I had checked out the website, it did not provide VIP ticket options or pricing.  The lady at the ticket window never mentioned anything about the VIP addition.

Is It Scary?  8.5

If the screams from the rest of my group were any indication, then the answer is a resounding yes.  My husband and I are hard to scare, but I will admit that even we jumped a couple of times.

Bang for your Buck:  9.8

Priced at only $13.00 per person, it is a steal.  My one complaint was that I was charged an additional dollar for using my credit card.  I feel that taking credit cards and debit cards is just a part of doing business.  I understand that the business gets charged for them, but I think that it should be factored into the overall ticket price.

Overall:

Eastaboga Manor is a creepy little nightmare hidden out in the middle of nowhere.  I loved the old school feel of the manor, make-up, and special effects.  The creativity that went into designing and making this haunt is wonderful.  The actors know what they are doing and seem to love what they do.  I am excited to see what they come up with next year.
